While WhatsApp keeps working to improve its app, often in small increments - although multi-device mode would be a big step forward - some projects deserve more attention than others. This is the case with the pilot program currently being tested in São Paulo, the economic capital of Brazil.

The messaging service thus sets up a directory system directly integrated into the application. This directory lists businesses and businesses (restaurants, supermarkets, retail stores, clothing stores, cultural venues, automotive services) located near your current location.

WhatsApp gives you in a few clicks, contact a business

To access it, simply click on the "New message" tab at the bottom right of the main interface. This then leads you to your list of contacts, overhung by a button "Businesses nearby", for "Shops nearby". By clicking on it, several categories of stores are offered according to your geolocation.

By clicking on one of them, the application then displays a directory of corresponding stores, accompanied by a photo, the address, the distance and its status (open or closed). By clicking on your final choice, it is then possible to start a discussion to request specific information, for example.

Currently confined to the city of São Paulo, the system could be deployed in other parts of the world, Matt Idema suggests to Reuters. India and Indonesia, for example, are in his sights. Several other countries could also be affected depending on the success of the feature and its adoption by users.

Commercial dynamics

This project also reflects the new business dynamic that WhatsApp started a few years ago. Last June, according to Reuters, Mark Zuckerberg, for example, showed his willingness to extend the Facebook Shops function - which allows brands to open an online store on Facebook - to WhatsApp.

The platform bought by Facebook in 2014 does not rule out the addition of sponsored ads that would highlight certain businesses on the list of stores displayed on your interface. This would allow him to monetize his directory system ... which could prove to be juicy considering the 2 billion monthly users registered on WhatsApp.
